When people talk about search engine optimization, the name ‘Google’ almost instantly comes to mind, then Yahoo butts and MSN being not that far behind. Google has been almost synonymous to the term ’search engine’ though it really should not be since there are other ‘major’ search engines out there. On the other hand, we can’t really blame Google for doing such a good job. In fact, I would even say that they revolutionized online search with their ever-changing algorithms.
But what if you are trying to optimize your website? Should you just focus on Google and hope that the same optimization techniques would work for the other search engines such as Yahoo and MSN?
Based on my experience, I find it to be easier to optimize first for the not-so-complex-algorithm search engines such as MSN. Then work your way up the ladder until you have conquered all including Google. This way, even if you haven’t reached page 1 in Google’s SERPS, you would still get traffic from MSN and Yahoo. Furthermore, among Google, Yahoo, and MSN, MSN indexes websites the fastest then Yahoo comes next and Google is almost always last unless you were struck by some bit of luck and got into their SERPS in just a matter of days.
Now, the next time that you do an SEO campaign, I would recommend optimizing for the ‘least and easiest of them all’ first.
